Fighting Water Damage From Winter Storms

When the temperatures are low, most are only concerned about snow flurries. However, there’s more to worry about than those white flakes. Winter storms can lead to damage to your home you might not be aware of. Things to watch for are…

  • Frozen pipes. When it gets cold enough outside for the rain to begin freezing, your pipes are liable to freeze as well. If you don’t take precaution to prevent the freezing, water can leak and lead to water damage. Open your cabinets allow more heat to the pipes and turn your faucet on slightly to keep water moving.
  • Flooding. When melting snow combines with heavy winter rains, flooding is a real threat. Keep an eye on your basement and crawlspace for signs of flooding, and check around the outside of your home for areas where water isn’t draining. Water accumulation can lead to mold, something nobody wants.
  • Gutter damage. Snow and ice can lead to damage to your gutters. Sometimes your gutters cannot hold the weight of snow or your gutters may wear down from ice. It’s important to ensure your gutters are working properly and ready to take on the influx of spring rain.

Should you find damage to your home from winter storms, it’s important to first try removing the moisture. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties can help you dry everything out.
