Rubber ducks floating in standing water in a laundry room When it comes to water damage in your home or business, it’s best to leave the project to trained professionals.

Today’s DIY culture makes sense when it comes to learning nifty home project tips on decorating or remodeling. When it comes to water damage, however, it’s best to leave the project to trained professionals. If you attempt to fix the damage yourself, you could make costly mistakes. Here are a few dos and don’ts you CAN follow when it comes to water damage.

Do

  • Shut off your water source right away. This way you can prevent an excessive amount of damage before it continues.
  • Take as many pictures as possible. By taking more pictures, you help prove to your insurance company the extent of the damage to your home and personal belongings. Another tip to prove the date of damage is to place the current dated newspaper in the video or picture frame.
  • Contact your insurance company and file a claim. Using the photos, you can help access any potential coverage.
  • Remove as much water as you can. Do your best to avoid causing secondary water damage in this process. This could be electrical, structural, or material damage.
  • Call SERVPRO immediately. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties takes pride in earning many certifications related to water damage and restoration. The SERVPRO team is here to help cleanup and restore from your water damage.

Don’t

  • Call an unlicensed contractor. This is not the time for a shortcut. Reach out to an experienced professional with the tools and resources you need.
  • Walk or tread through the water damage. For safety reasons, avoid this as there could be potential electrical exposure.
  • Assume you have removed all the water and dried it. Call SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties for a moisture check since it’s impossible to detect remaining water without specialized tools.
  • Turn on the lights. Ensure the light’s globe is not full of water or the fixture is not dripping. This could lead to further damage.
  • Start removing materials such as flooring or drywall. If you attempt to remove it before it is approved by insurance, it may not be covered. Much of these materials can be saved through the detailed cleanup and restoration process.

Fixing the damage on your own is not an easy feat and often leads to extensive damage. If you find yourself in the thick of water damage, contact SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties. SERVPRO is faster to any disaster and can make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing Water Damage

Leaking water line Check all water lines including the shut off and connection points to ensure there are no leaks.

During the months of June through August, the summer is known for its dramatic rain storms. This can lead to significant damage to homes structurally or cosmetically. Much of this damage can be prevented by performing different acts of care to your home systems.

Here are some helpful tips on what you can do to avoid water damage to your home.

  • Check all water lines including the shut off and connection points to ensure there are no leaks.
  • Clean your gutters out regularly as water must be able to flow freely. Make sure gutters and downspouts are moving water away from your home as puddles of water could damage your foundation. A possible solution to redirecting your water is a downspout extension and elbow. Downspouts should be releasing water at least 10 feet away from your home.
  • If you have a sump pump, verify the quality of it. Sump pumps help keep groundwater out of your basement or crawl space. You can test it by filling the sump pit with water and see if water is pumping out. If it does not, double check that the sump pump is plugged in and the breaker is working. Outlet pipes could also be frozen or clogged, discharge lines could be dirty, or the motor might not be working properly.
  • Make sure your drain lines are not blocked. If they remain clogged, all the sewage and wastewater will continue to sit. Eventually, they will move into a different drain and begin to come into contact with the floor drains, creating a stench.
  • Pay attention to your water bill. A large change in it might correspond with a leak. While some home insurance may cover this, it is important to keep an eye out for any strange occurrences.
  • When the temperature starts to drop, winterize outside water accesses. The first step in this process is to shut off the water. Next, detach and drain the garden hose. Drain any remaining water. Then, open the bleeder cap on the side of the water supply valve to release trapped water. Lastly, turn off the outdoor spigot to stop cold air from entering the piping system.

Water damage can be such a headache. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties is here to help you in any situation, and make it, “Like it never even happened.” Give SERVPRO a call should you experience water damage at (765) 575-8654.

Tips on Water Damage

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage on a wall Regularly check areas of possible water damage. These areas can go unnoticed, and it’s better to be aware of it before it becomes an issue.

Whether it be a flooded basement after a pipe burst or a summer storm causing significant damage to your home, your personal belongings may be at risk. Keeping your children’s art projects or your cherished basketball jerseys protected is as important to SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties as it is to you. Here are some helpful tips on how to save your prized possessions.

  • While storing personal belongings in your basement, keep items at least six inches off the ground to help prevent possible water damage. This will stop any sitting water from soaking in.
  • Plastic totes are a lifesaver for belongings when they are in an area with potential water damage. The thicker material provides better protection against the harmful effects of water.
  • Be proactive and do not store any possessions near potential water damage sites. These include, but not limited to, pipes, bathrooms, and attics.
  • Regularly check on areas of possible water damage from time to time. Sometimes water damage can go unnoticed, and it’s better to be aware of it early so it won’t become a major issue.
  • Avoid putting your things against the walls or tucked into the corners. Stacking items close to the wall restricts the air flow, allowing condensation to accumulate and increasing the chance of mold.

Should you find yourself a victim of water damage in your home, there is no need to worry. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties offers 24/7 emergency restoration services and will clean it up, “Like it never even happened.”

How To Prevent Water Damage This Winter

10/30/2021 (Permalink)

Snowflakes in winter Whether it’s a leaky pipe, devastating storm, or malfunctioning appliances—water damage is a homeowner’s worst nightmare.

Whether it’s a leaky pipe, devastating storm, or malfunctioning appliances—water damage is a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Just the idea of water damage to your home is enough to make a homeowner shiver. Thankfully, many sources of water damage can be prevented.

SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties has a few tips to help you avoid water damage to your home this winter. By following these tips, your home will be at a lesser risk of a water damage disaster.

  • Check your water heater. Water heaters normally last about 8-12 years. However, if it is not properly cared for, it can corrode and cause leaks or overflow. To ensure your water heater is up to par, check it periodically for moisture or water surrounding the stand it rests on.

  • Clean your gutters. If there is a buildup of debris in your gutters it will stop them from doing their job properly. As a result, water can spill over through the roof, into the foundation, and down to your basement or crawl space.

  • Prevent frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can cost thousands of dollars in damage and put your home at risk of mold and microbial growth. Pipes located in the outside walls, crawl spaces, and attics are the most vulnerable to freezing. Insulate the pipes that are exposed to cold air and keep the faucet dripping during extremely cold weather.

By implementing these tips, you are less likely to experience water damage this winter. However, should you find your home with water damage, give SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties a call! The SERVPRO team is faster to any disaster and will make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Signs of Water Damage in Your Bathroom

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

Water overflowing in tub Don’t fall victim to water damage in the bathroom.

Your bathroom sees the highest water usage in your home, so it’s an area where water damage can easily occur. The damage can often be found behind the walls or under the floor.  You might think soaking the water up with a towel will suffice, but more than likely the water has already begun wreaking havoc.

When water pools under the bathtub or shower it can cause mold or mildew to form which leads to wood rot. This damage can be so severe that it is possible for your bathroom appliances to fall through the floor if not remedied. Don’t fall victim to water damage in the bathroom- check for these three signs you may have bathroom water damage:

Spongy or soft floor- If your bathroom has a wooden floor, the sub floor is likely made of plywood. If plywood is subject to water, it will begin to rot, and your floors will feel spongy or soft in places.

Musty smell- If your bathroom continues to smell musty or damp, even after you clean it, you might have mold and mildew in the walls and subfloor.

Gaps between caulk, tub, and tile- If you have visible gaps in the grout or caulk of your shower or bathtub, water might be seeping into the walls and subfloor. This water leak could lead to mold, mildew, and wood rot.

If you notice any of these signs in your bathroom, don’t wait to call for help. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties offers 24/7 emergency services and are faster to any disaster. Give us a call if you suspect water damage and the team will make it, “Like it never even happened.”

How To Prevent Water Damage in Your Garage

7/28/2021 (Permalink)

Closeup image of a wooden garage door Your garage could be in danger of water damage.

Whether it be heavy rainfall, flooding from melted snow, or some sort of water leak- your garage could be in danger of water damage. If your garage is storing more than just a car, it’s important that those items do not get ruined. Next to the basement, the garage is the single largest storage area found in most homes.

Not only can items become damaged due to water, but the foundation of your home can suffer as well. Garage doors are notoriously difficult to completely seal, giving water access to the inside. It’s also important that the gutters around your garage are working properly and effectively.

Prevent water damage to the items you are storing in your garage by following these helpful tips and tricks:

  • Install sandbags or flood barriers around cracks and between the doors and garage. This will prevent the water from seeping into your garage and home.
  • Create an effective plan for landscaping. Putting bushes, grass, or trees close to your home and garage will help with water absorption and allow less to get near your home.
  • Replace the weatherstripping on your garage door as it wears down to allow it to work properly.
  • Keep gutters clean and free of loose debris that would keep the water from draining.
  • Store your valuable items highest off the ground- using shelves, bins, or pallets.

Should you find yourself the victim of water damage in your garage, no need to panic. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties offers 24/7 emergency restoration services and will have the mess, “Like it never even happened.”

The Smell in Your Home Could be Mold

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

Mold around doorframe Mold can grow within 48 hours of encountering water and can be found under floorboards, behind walls, in the ductwork, or in basements.

The smell of rainfall can sometimes leave a pleasant aroma in the air. However, if you notice a musky smell after heavy rain, it could mean danger for you and your family. Actively growing molds release compounds that usually have a distinct, foul, odor.

If a room in your home smells musty following rain, there is a good chance that mold is present. How can the smell of mold be described other than musty? Mold can smell like rotting wood or wet socks. If you notice this smell in your home or excess water, call SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties immediately. Mold can grow within 48 hours of encountering water and can be found under floorboards, behind walls, in the ductwork, or in basements.

Mold can cause health effects to both humans and animals. Don’t let mold or water go untreated. Contact SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties for a property assessment to see how best to treat the mold problem. The SERVPRO staff receives regular training on mold remediation and has the most up-to-date certifications.

Water damage to your home isn’t something that only occurs in the spring. During the colder months, snow melts and turns into water- which can turn into costly damage to your home. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties is faster to any size disaster and we offer 24-hour emergency services. However, by following these tips you can save yourself a lot of time and money by avoiding the problem altogether:

  • Protect your pipes- Flooding from frozen burst pipes is an expensive fix, and fairly simple to avoid. Check your plumbing for corrosion and wrap insulation sleeves around pipes in unheated/outdoor areas. If the temperature is going to dip below freezing, keep your water dripping in all faucets.
  • Drainage from the roof- Heavy snowfall can damage your roof, especially if it’s flat. Icicles can potentially tear your gutters and roof shingles off. Hire someone to clear your roof if there is a heavy snowfall. Be sure to insulate your attic floor and keep the attic itself cool and well-ventilated.
  • Basement water damage- Basements are ground zero, being the ideal spot for potential water damage. If you store a lot of things in your basement, keep them off the floor by storing them on skids. Keep an eye on your hot water tank as well, the lifespan of one is about 10 years.

Should you fall victim to winter water damage, have no fear. Give SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties a call and we’ll make it, “Like it never even happened.”

When Water Strikes: Part 2- Keeping Track of Your Items

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

When your personal property falls victim to water damage, don’t trust just anyone to clean up the mess. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties specializes in restoring contents damaged by water. Should your home require extensive restoration or cleaning, leave it to the professionals. We offer Move-Outs/Pack-Outs and Contents Claim Inventory Service (CCIS) to ease your sense of worry.

Our CCIS is a detailed and accurate list of your belongings that were damaged by water. We take a room-by-room inventory of your contents, and in some instances, use a bar coding system. Along with the list of contents, you will also receive a preloss list and value of contents. This information will help settle insurance claims quicker and give you peace of mind when you need it most.

Once we have accessed your belongings, we can begin the Move-Out/Pack-Out process. Allowing us to perform this will benefit you by preventing items from potential damage and protecting contents from further on-site damage. When the restoration is complete, we will work with you to coordinate the move-in according to your needs.

Rather than stress about who is caring for your belongings, trust the professionals. Give SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties a call at (765) 575-8654 and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

When Water Strikes: Part 3- Preserving Your Valuables

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

When your contents make contact with water, the best way to save valuable items is to take prompt action using extreme caution to prevent further damage. Items such as electronics, documents, or photographs require special drying techniques to minimize additional damage that might occur. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties offer special services to help save your belongings after water damage.

Electronic cleanup- Do not attempt to turn on or operate any electrical devices that might have come in contact or been damaged by water. We will coordinate restoration of your electronics, including: TV sets, DVD players, computers, and more. Electronics are cleaned and inspected by a qualified electronic technician before returned to ensure it is safe to use.

Document/photograph drying- Although some documents might not be restored to pre-water damage condition, SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties can save a great deal and help minimize additional damage. Depending on the type of document and level of water damage, there are a few restoration options: air drying, dehumidification, freezer drying, vacuum freezer drying, and vacuum thermal drying.

If water strikes and impacts your valuables, take action immediately. Give SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties a call at (765) 575-8654 and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water damage can do more than destroy the structure of your home. It can also be held responsible for ruining personal belongings as well. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties understands that your home is much more than a structure- your family’s furniture, clothing, keepsakes, and other belongings are what turn a house into a home.

SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties specializes in restoring contents damaged by fire, water, or mold. SERVPRO has the mentality of “restore” versus “replace” and understands the sentiment your personal items hold. We pretest your contents to determine what items can be restored back to their condition before the water damage. Several cleaning methods will be used to clean your contents, including the following:

  • Dry Cleaning- Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning- An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe- Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning- Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning- Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning- Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

Staying Dry After Spring Rains

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Spring in Indiana means the grass is growing and the flowers are blooming. All of that growing and blooming is made possible by the abundant rains the area receives. While rain might be great for growing plants, it may not be great for a basement prone to flooding. How can you manage water damage caused by springtime rain?

  1. Remove it quickly. If you experience flooding in your home or business, reach out to SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties by calling 765-575-9654. Our trained team is “Faster to any size disaster” and can get the water out of your property.
  2. Dry it out. It’s vital that you thoroughly dry your property. Just because the water is mopped up doesn’t mean there isn’t dampness in the floors and walls that needs to be remedied. SERVPRO has advanced equipment that can determine dryness and air movers that can expedite the drying process.
  3. Watch for mold. Mold isn’t just unsightly, it can lead to toxic air. SERVPRO can detect unhealthy levels of mold spores and clean it up as needed. SERVPRO has machines that are actually called “air scrubbers.” These machines leave the air clean and fresh… without mold spores.

Crawlspace Condensation

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Vents in the crawlspace

Did you know that a majority of crawlspaces have vents built into them? Do you know that those vent's should be open or closed depending on the time of year?

So when should we open or close our vents?

From April to October you should leave vents open. Once October comes around it is time to close them up for the winter months, through March.

But why does it matter?

A main reason for having the vents closed during the winter months is because the outside air is very cold and the air inside of your house is warm, which will lead to condensation on your subfloor and floor joist where the two air temperatures meet. This can also be the case in the summer when your house is cooler and the outside temperatures are warmer.

Long exposures of condensation can lead to mold build up and rotting wood. Another reason to close your vents in the winter months is to help the crawlspace maintain higher temperatures which can also help prevent pipes from freezing, swelling, and then potentially breaking once they have thawed; these breaks can lead to water damage that could go undetected for a long period of time.

What happens if I discover mold or water damage in my crawlspace?

The Science of Drying

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

The science of drying is known as psychrometry, the measurement of the properties of moist air. The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages.

Follow the guidelines of the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) SERVPRO will

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly during the process
  • “Speed up Mother Nature” by using professional drying equipment

“Speed up Mother Nature”

A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages can occur. Because of this, SERVPRO has been trained to use top-of-the line equipment to help Mother Nature along. We speed Mother Nature up by increasing the rate of evaporation. SERVPRO also uses state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and proven scientific processes to help speed the drying of your home or business.

When fire or water damage puts the things that matter most on the line, you need a brand you can trust. Call on a restoration system serving insurance companies and their insured, as well as thousands of commercial property owners in North America. You can trust the SERVPRO Brand, too!

Emergency Water Damage Tips For Your Home or Business

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know there are different types of water?

Category 1 Clean - water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants

Examples: Broken Pipe, Icemaker, Drain Overflow

Category 2 Gray - water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. May contain bacteria and viruses. Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated.

Examples: Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Roof Leak

Category 3 Black - water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.

Examples: flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

If you experience a water damage Call SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties 765-575-8654, we are always ready to assist you and make it “Like it never even happened”.

Until help arrives

for CLEAN water only

DO:

  • Shut off the water source if possible.

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.

  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.

  • Place aluminum foil under furniture legs, this can prevent staining.

  • Hang furs and leather goods separately at room temperature.

  • Remove Oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpeting.

  • Wipe excess water from wooden furniture, removing items from table first.

  • Remove valuable pictures/art to a safe dry place.

DON'T:

  • Do not use a household vacuum to remove water.

  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

  • Do not leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpeting.

DO NOT attempt clean up of “BLACK” water yourself.
